A Castle with Medieval Roots and Great Views
Schönberg is Saxony’s southernmost village on the southern slopes of the Elster Mountains. It is dominated by the old castle, which was supposed to secure the border to Bohemia.
Schönberg Castle dates back to the 15th century and was beautifully renovated in 1994. The octagonal tower dates back to 1485, the three story mansion was built around 1685.
The old moated castle, which served as a knight’s seat as early as 1261, was the southernmost fortification on the border with the Bohemian Kingdom. Since it was in the Egerland, it had the precarious status of an enclave of the bailiffs of Plauen at the latest when it was pledged (1322). In 1386 the Thosse owned Schönberg as a fiefdom of the Eger Castle Authority. Over time, the complex became strategically unimportant, but in 1485 it came into the possession of the von Reitzenstein family, who rebuilt it and lived in it continuously until 1945.
The village and castle, close to the forest and Kapellenberg, are very attractive and offer stunning views over the Eger area in the Czech Republic. The castle itself has a cafe and is open during the season (March to October) from 2pm to 5pm. Castle tours are also available.
